Inaugural Lake City Opportunity Board Elects Officers

The Lake City Opportunity Board held its inaugural meeting Jan. 31 establishing its bylaws, electing board officials, and setting in motion more options for community growth.

“The corporation will work with our administration on policies and initiatives and serve as a way for the public to be involved in our city’s development,” said William A. Hall, city administrator. “As a nonprofit organization, the Lake City Opportunity Corporation has some capabilities that municipal governments do not have and can own property, invest funds, and engage in business activities that the city cannot.”

“Our goal is to help develop the community of Lake City and the surrounding area by enhancing investment and job opportunities, housing, and public welfare,” said Karon Epps, the newly elected secretary for the board.

The inaugural board for the corporation consists of five directors and two non-voting members appointed by the Darla Moore Foundation and the Greater Lake City Alliance.

The resolution appointing the board members was approved by the City of Lake City Council in the Nov. 13, 2023, regular council meeting, with the final, non-voting member of the board appointed in the Dec. 12, 2023, council meeting.

“The corporation is an independent organization that doesn’t answer to the city,” said Hall. “However, we anticipate working well together for the future of our community.”

The board will meet six times each year. The next meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m., March 26, at the Lake City Judicial Center, 202 Kelley Street, Lake City.
