Brownfields

"Brownfields are real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant."

Redeveloping Blighted Properties in the Community

Lake City received a $400,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to address brownfields potentially contaminated by hazardous substances and/or petroleum products. Grant funds are being used to complete environmental site assessments (Phase I and II, and Asbestos and Lead Based Paint Surveys) on selected brownfield sites within our City. Other grant activities include community outreach, cleanup and redevelopment planning, and visioning.

These efforts will facilitate the transition of former commercial and industrial sites to new, useful purposes. The redevelopment of these properties will spur economic growth and create jobs while protecting the environment.
